Raised during Prussia’s desperate struggle against Napoleon, the Prussian Landwehr Cavalry transformed ordinary citizens into a formidable mounted fighting force. Drawn from across the provinces of Prussia, these militia cavalry regiments became a major component of the army during the campaigns of 1813 through to Waterloo.
Formed in 1813, the Landwehr Cavalry served as the mounted counterpart to the famous Prussian Landwehr infantry formations. While lacking the prestige of regular cuirassiers or hussars, their sheer numbers and battlefield presence made them an invaluable asset to Blücher’s armies.
The cavalrymen wore the characteristic dark blue Litewka coat of the Prussian forces, combined with provincial colours on collars and cuffs. Their equipment reflected the practical realities of wartime mobilisation, with mixed headgear including shakos and feldmutze caps often protected by oilskin covers.
For Black Powder, these mounted militia provide an excellent way to expand a Prussian army with historically important cavalry formations from the final Napoleonic campaigns. Their black-and-white lance pennons create an especially striking appearance on the tabletop.
The detailed sculpts capture the militia character of the Landwehr exceptionally well, combining practical equipment, dynamic poses and mounted formations full of battlefield energy. They add both visual variety and historical depth to larger Prussian collections.
Making up a substantial portion of Blücher’s mounted forces at Waterloo, the Landwehr Cavalry proved that determination and national resolve could rival Europe’s finest regular cavalry regiments.
