Air supremacy was a constant challenge during the Second World War. In the Battle of France, the Luftwaffe's fearsome Stukas played a crucial role in the Blitzkrieg that led to German victory. Over the English Channel, the courage of RAF pilots helped protect their country from invasion. In the skies over Kursk, Smolensk and Stalingrad, many Soviet pilots defended their homeland against enemy bombers. In the Pacific, American fighters put up a fierce fight against the powerful Japanese Zeros. When the Allied forces landed in Europe, they enjoyed continuous air cover provided by fighters, fighter-bombers and bombers. By this time, Allied air superiority was total.
