The Vauban is the largest and oldest of the first rising-type ships still in service for the Republic. When it was launched, photojournalists captured the imagination of the French people, immortalising the Vauban as an engineering marvel floating majestically low in the sky, sending its heroic squadrons of fighters and bombers to victory.

It is said that, in the weeks following the public presentation of the first Vauban Heavenly Fortress, French military recruitment centres recorded a 22% increase in applications. So many people applied to join the Aeronautical Service that public relations officers were deployed to direct volunteers to posts where they were most needed. Young recruits were promised that a post in the infantry could lead to an assault role on a rising cruiser, with perhaps, in time, a promotion aboard a Vauban. Although this was technically possible, the reality was often very different.

Some lucky pilots did, however, reach the coveted position aboard a Frelon bomber. These imposing aircraft, with wings that fold down to fit into the hangars of aircraft carriers, appear gigantic when you're standing next to them. Even the imposing Vauban can only carry a limited number of these aircraft. Thanks to their exceptional payload capacity, the Hornets are capable of inflicting devastating losses.

Today, the Vauban is synonymous with excellence within the Aeronautical Service, bringing together the most talented crews. A small fraction of those early recruits achieved their dream, but it took hard work, determination and a good dose of luck. That reputation for luck seems to stick with Vauban-class ships, each with its fair share of tales of victory against seemingly insurmountable odds... at least according to the publicists.
