Basing Materials
A variety of materials are used to decorate bases for miniatures, creating attractive, themed bases. Sand is one of the most common materials used to give bases a realistic texture. It can be applied to the entire surface of the base to simulate desert terrain, beaches or arid landscapes. Sand can be mixed with paints or pigments to achieve a variety of shades and effects.

Gravel and small pebbles are used to create rocky or uneven terrain. They add an extra dimension and can be arranged to imitate paths, rubble or wind-blown surfaces. Chippings can also be painted or dyed to match the colour scheme of the model or surrounding scenery.
Synthetic mosses and grasses are popular for adding greenery or natural details to pedestals. Moss can be used to represent tufts of grass, bushes or forested areas, while synthetic grasses can simulate tall grass or meadows. These materials are often attached using PVA glue or other adhesives and can be combined with other elements such as debris or dead leaves for a more realistic effect.
