Soviet Naval Brigade Squad
When Nazi forces pushed deep into Soviet territory, the hardened sailors of the Baltic and Black Sea Fleets left their ships to fight as infantry, earning a fearsome reputation on land. So effective and relentless were these naval troops that the Germans dubbed them “The Black Death,” a nod to their dark uniforms and ruthless skill in battle. Still dressed in their iconic striped shirts and naval caps, these sailors brought discipline and fighting spirit to every front they served on.
The rapid German advance bottled up much of the Soviet Baltic Fleet in Leningrad and the Black Sea Fleet in port. In Leningrad, fleet vessels were repurposed as anti-aircraft batteries and long-range artillery during the prolonged siege. Meanwhile, thousands of sailors were sent to reinforce the Red Army as riflemen, filling critical gaps in the Soviet defense lines. Though trained for naval warfare, these troops adapted quickly to ground combat, where their tenacity stood out.
Approximately 350,000 Soviet Navy sailors fought on land during the Great Patriotic War. Their performance led to the formation of dedicated naval infantry units—40 brigades and five regiments—renowned for their bravery in both defensive operations and bold coastal landings in the Baltic and Black Seas. This figure set captures the essence of these legendary forces, ideal for adding unique and historically rich elements to your tabletop battles or collection. Whether storming a beachhead or holding a city block, these naval infantry figures embody the fighting spirit of the Soviet war effort.
