With the Soviet navy largely confined to its harbours, many sailors serve on the front lines as infantrymen, often still wearing their black naval uniforms with distinctive caps and striped telnyashka undershirts. Numerous specialised naval infantry formations are created, including forty brigades and five regiments. They earn a strong reputation for tenacity and daring, both in defensive battles and in coastal landing operations on the Baltic and Black Seas.
Drawing on previous military experience and a powerful esprit de corps, these troops rank among the finest available to Soviet commanders. On the Bolt Action tabletop, Naval Brigade units form part of the Hammer & Sickle army special rules and benefit from the ever-useful Tough Fighters rule, increasing their effectiveness in close combat. They are heavily equipped with submachine guns, making them ideal for unleashing devastating short-range firepower.
German troops refer to the Naval Infantry as the “Black Death” because of their black or dark blue uniforms and their fierce reputation, a well-earned nickname.
