When the German army crashed over the Russian border in 1941, Hitler was confident of a swift and decisive campaign. He nearly got one, but the heroic defense mounted by the vast Soviet armies slowed the Nazi advance. This resistance was carried out by the ordinary Red Army soldier, known to the Germans as “Ivan.” Brave, resilient, and fiercely loyal, these troops fought in brutal conditions with simple yet effective equipment.
The bitter lessons learned during the war in Finland, where thousands of Soviet troops perished from frostbite, led to major improvements in winter gear. Later-issue cold-weather uniforms were warm, padded, and comfortable—highly coveted by the German troops shivering in their thin overcoats.
Hardened by the relentless Eastern Front, these soldiers could lie in the snow for hours, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Urrah!
