Origins and way of life: Wildlings are descended from the First Men, who inhabited Westeros long before the Children of the Forest built the Wall. They live mainly beyond the Wall, in the wilds of the north, where the climate is harsh and unforgiving. Their way of life is mainly pastoral, raising livestock and hunting for food. They do not recognise the authority of the kings of the south and prefer to live according to their own customs.
Social organisation: Savage society is divided into several tribes, each led by a chief or king. These chiefs can vary in power and influence, and their leadership is often determined by their ability to lead and protect their tribe. Before unification under Mance Rayder, the Wildlings were often at war with each other, but they came together to face the common threat of the White Walkers.
Customs and traditions: Wildlings have distinct customs, including free marriages where couples can choose themselves rather than being arranged, and where women often have more freedom and decision-making power than in the societies of the southern kingdoms. They also have their own rituals, such as the coming-of-age ceremony known as the 'Feast of Swords' and beliefs linked to the ancient forest gods.
Relationship with the Wall and the Night's Watch:
Wildlings have often been in conflict with the Night's Watch, who protect the Wall. They see the Wall as an artificial barrier and often despise members of the Night's Watch for their loyalty to the kings of the south. However, some Wildlings, such as Jon Snow, have joined the Night's Watch and sought to build bridges between the two peoples.
Leadership of Mance Rayder: Mance Rayder, nicknamed the King-beyond-the-Wall, united many Wildling tribes under his banner to face the growing threat of the White Walkers. His charismatic leadership and ambition were essential in rallying the Wildlings behind a common cause, although his attempt to invade the southern kingdoms ultimately ended in failure.
