Soviet Airborne Squad
The Soviet Union was a pioneer in the development of airborne forces, forming its first brigade-sized paratroop unit following successful trials in December 1932. Additional formations soon followed, and by June 1941, the Red Army fielded five full Airborne Corps—making it the largest and most ambitious airborne force in the world at the time. However, during the brutal early months of the war, these elite troops were repurposed as regular infantry and suffered devastating losses.
Airborne operations began in earnest during the defense of Moscow in late 1941 and early 1942, with paratroopers dropped in battalion-sized units. In February 1942, the entire 4th Airborne Corps was dropped behind German lines. Though it managed to operate for six months in enemy territory, it failed to achieve its primary goals. As the battle for Stalingrad intensified, all remaining airborne troops were once again redirected to conventional ground combat roles.
Soviet paratroopers were known for their exceptional courage and aggressive spirit, but they were chronically under-supported and lacked adequate anti-tank weaponry. This set includes 10 finely detailed metal miniatures representing Soviet airborne troops: one NCO with a submachine gun, four paratroopers with SMGs, three with rifles, and a two-man light machine gun team. Plastic bases are included. Perfect for collectors and wargamers alike, these figures bring to life the daring operations of one of the Red Army’s most elite and hard-pressed formations.
