Fast, versatile, and ahead of its time, the Panhard 178—known informally as the “Pan-Pan”—was a breakthrough in armoured vehicle design. Originally intended for colonial policing duties, this armoured reconnaissance car became the world’s first mass-produced 4x4 armoured vehicle. Designed for the French Cavalry, it brought a combination of speed, firepower, and reliability to the battlefield in the early stages of World War II.
Manned by a crew of four, the Panhard 178 was equipped with a powerful 25mm main gun and a 7.5mm coaxial machine gun. Its combat debut came in Norway during the German invasion of 1940, followed by operations in Belgium, the Netherlands, and France itself, including its notable role at the Battle of Hannut. There, it proved highly effective in reconnaissance and support roles, taking full advantage of its off-road mobility and armament.
After the fall of France, many Panhard 178s were captured and re-designated by the German army as the Panzerspähwagen P204 (f). These vehicles saw action again during Operation Barbarossa on the Eastern Front. This product includes one resin and metal model of the Panhard 178, featuring a metal tank crewman, stat cards, damage markers, a decal sheet, and an order dice. Please note: the model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, making it an excellent choice for collectors, hobbyists, and historical wargamers.
