Despite Mussolini’s famous claim that Italy had eight million bayonets at the ready, the reality of the Italian army was far less grandiose. Largely made up of conscripts, many soldiers lacked proper training, equipment, and motivation. Unit performance varied widely, but Italian troops still showed notable resilience in key battles across North Africa and the Eastern Front.
This kit accurately captures the look and feel of WWII Italian infantry, including key firearms like the M91/41 and M38 Carcano rifles and the M91/38 cavalry carbine with its fixed rear sight and folding bayonet. The excellent Beretta M38 was the standard-issue submachine gun, while the Breda Model 1930 LMG was less reliable, with a low rate of fire and mechanical fragility. Uniform details reflect the M37 and M40 tunics, with added options like the Sahariana smock for campaign variety.
Also featured are components to build Blackshirt militia—Camicie Nere—Italy’s fascist paramilitary forces.
