American War of Independence – Colonial Militia
18th century America was a dangerous and uncertain place, with frontier communities facing perceived or real threats from Native American raids as well as French and Spanish incursions. With the British Army in the colonies being relatively small, much of the local defence fell to militia forces raised from civilian populations.
These militias were locally organised units led by prominent members of the community and equipped with standard muskets. Their effectiveness varied greatly, with some performing well in combat while others broke under pressure. Despite this inconsistency, they provided essential manpower to both sides of the conflict, including American Patriots and Loyalist forces supporting the Crown. Militia units typically lacked bayonets and were often reluctant to engage in close combat with regular troops.
This boxed set allows players to field colonial militia units for Black Powder. The figures are dressed in a mix of 18th-century civilian clothing and hunting shirts, with a range of headgear options included. They can also be used to represent French forces from the French & Indian War period, making them a highly versatile addition to historical collections.
