American Civil War – Union & Confederate Infantry
In many civil wars throughout history, both opposing forces are equipped in broadly similar ways, with uniforms and flags serving as the primary means of identification on the battlefield. The American Civil War followed this pattern, with Union and Confederate armies distinguished mainly by colour and insignia rather than fundamentally different equipment. These miniatures depict infantry in firing line positions and can be painted as either Union or Confederate regiments.
Union troops typically wore dark blue tunics with light blue trousers and were armed with percussion rifles. Over time, these soldiers developed the ability to manoeuvre effectively over long distances and conduct coordinated battlefield operations. Early-war regiments were often inexperienced, but by the end of the conflict the Union Army had evolved into a disciplined and effective fighting force capable of standing toe-to-toe with Confederate troops.
Confederate infantry were generally hardy and accustomed to hardship, with many already familiar with firearms prior to the war. However, they were often poorly supplied and equipped compared to their Northern opponents, relying on captured Federal equipment or privately sourced weapons. Despite this, they earned a fearsome reputation for aggressive assaults and the distinctive “Rebel Yell” used to intimidate enemy troops. This boxed set allows players to represent both sides of the conflict in Black Powder.
