In many civil wars throughout history, both sides are equipped in broadly similar ways, with uniforms and flags acting as the primary means of identification on the battlefield. The American Civil War is no exception, with Union and Confederate forces often differentiated mainly by colour and insignia. These miniatures depict infantry advancing with their firearms in a “right shoulder shift” position and can be painted as either Union or Confederate regiments.

Product Details

Union soldiers are depicted wearing dark blue tunics and light blue trousers, armed with percussion rifles. Over time, these troops developed the ability to manoeuvre over long distances and conduct coordinated operations across the battlefield. Early regiments were often mixed in quality and experience, but by the end of the war the Union Army had become a disciplined and effective fighting force, capable of matching the Confederate infantry in major engagements.

Confederate regiments are known for their toughness and resilience under difficult conditions. Often less well supplied and equipped than their Northern counterparts, they relied on a mix of captured weapons, including Enfield rifles where available, as well as a variety of other firearms. Despite their irregular appearance, Southern troops were renowned for their aggressive charges and the intimidating “Rebel Yell”, used to disrupt enemy formations. This boxed set allows players to recreate both sides of this iconic conflict in Black Powder.
