Over 70 Zouave regiments were raised within the Union Army, with a smaller number also serving in Confederate forces. These troops are characterised by their extravagant uniforms, including flowing pantaloons, ornate jackets, and a variety of distinctive headgear. Often deployed initially as light skirmish infantry, some Zouave units later transitioned into standard line infantry roles, while others retained their elite identity throughout the conflict.

On the battlefield, Zouave units developed a strong sense of identity and esprit de corps, frequently considering themselves elite troops. Many gained a well-earned reputation for aggressive and determined fighting.
