Scattered survivors, forgotten records and hard-bitten veterans brought together from the remnants of Britain’s battered forces — the 3rd Battalion of Detachments stands as one of the most unusual formations of the Napoleonic Wars.
Assembled from recovered soldiers left dispersed after the retreat associated with Sir John Moore’s campaign, the battalion gathered men hardened by exhaustion, poor supply and brutal campaigning. Though often regarded as unruly and difficult to control, they quickly proved themselves in action during the Douro campaign and the capture of Oporto in 1809.
Their most infamous encounter came near the village of Grijo, where they clashed with the feared French regiment known as “The Butchers.” The savage engagement became legendary not only for the fighting between the soldiers, but also for the vicious confrontation between the battalion mascot Duchess, a British bull terrier, and Fifi, the French regiment’s poodle.
For Black Powder, this set offers a highly narrative addition to British Napoleonic forces, perfectly suited for Peninsular War themed armies and story-driven scenarios. The miniatures capture the rough, battle-worn character of these irregular survivors with exceptional personality.
Every figure reflects the harsh realities of campaign life, from weathered appearances to determined poses that give the unit a unique presence on the tabletop. They are an excellent choice for hobbyists seeking character-driven formations beyond standard line regiments.
Undisciplined, battle-scarred and impossible to ignore, the men of the 3rd Battalion march into battle carrying the reputation of soldiers forged in chaos and hardship.
