Stealthy in advance, deadly at range and renowned for their battlefield discipline, the men of the 95th Rifles became one of the most famous units of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. Unlike the traditional red-coated infantry of Britain, these elite riflemen wore dark green uniforms that made them instantly recognisable on the battlefield.
Nicknamed the “Grasshoppers” or “Sweeps” by French troops, the 95th specialised in skirmishing, reconnaissance and precision shooting. Their primary weapon, the Baker rifle, offered remarkable accuracy for the period and allowed skilled marksmen to engage individual targets at distances far beyond those achievable with standard smoothbore muskets.
In Black Powder, the 95th Rifles provide British armies with highly flexible light infantry capable of disrupting enemy formations, screening advances and targeting vulnerable positions ahead of the main battle line.
Among their ranks served the respected “Chosen Men,” distinguished by white tape worn around the arm. These experienced soldiers were trusted to maintain discipline and inspire the rest of the company during combat.
To compensate for the shorter length of the Baker rifle, the regiment was equipped with imposing sword bayonets that gave them a fighting chance in brutal close-quarters engagements.
With their distinctive appearance and legendary battlefield reputation, the 95th Rifles are an outstanding addition to any British Napoleonic collection focused on mobility, skirmishing and elite light infantry tactics.
