This firepower was further reinforced by highly effective close air support, most famously provided by the IL-2 Sturmovik, a rugged low-level attack aircraft designed specifically for ground-attack missions. Together, massed artillery and aerial support allowed Soviet forces to maintain relentless pressure and dominate key areas of the battlefield.

To bring all this firepower to bear, Forward Observer Teams were essential. Consisting of two specialists armed with the most dangerous tools on the battlefield — binoculars and a radio — they directed artillery and air strikes onto enemy positions. On the Bolt Action tabletop, this small team delivers a significant tactical boost to any Soviet Rifle Platoon, greatly enhancing its ability to strike with precision and control the flow of battle.
