However, many have pondered why these mages, regarded as some of the most innovative and creative practitioners of magic, seldom rise to greater political prominence within the Hundred Kingdoms, either individually or as organized institutions. The inherent imbalance of the soul required by their craft often leads to excessive or compulsive behavior, hindering their social and political advancement. The tales of fiery-tempered pyromancers, distracted Aeolomancers, or obsessive Geomancers are not mere cultural clichés; rather, they reflect the esoteric obsessions and tendencies that isolate these mages from mundane society, often rendering them pariahs or recluses.
This necessary imbalance, inherent in young human Gifted individuals, leads many to seek guidance from the Chapters, chartered schools established by the Imperial Court for the identification, protection, and control of the Gifted population of the Empire. These schools vary widely in their focus, catering to the diverse talents of their students: The Pool of Stillness primarily accommodates Geomancers and Hydromancers, with some Aeolomancers seeking solace. The Gates of Fire, renowned as the premier battle-mage training ground, predominantly attracts pyromancers, although Aeolomancers and Hydromancers also find their place within its strict discipline.
