The Chi-Nu medium tank represents Japan’s efforts to modernise its armoured forces in response to rapidly changing battlefield conditions. Early encounters with Allied tanks such as the Matilda, Lee, and Sherman highlight the shortcomings of existing Japanese designs. The Chi-Nu emerges as a direct response to these challenges, incorporating significant improvements in firepower, protection, and mobility. It reflects a critical step in Japan’s attempt to keep pace with intense conflict and accelerating technological development.
The Chi-Nu is armed with the Type 3 75mm tank gun, designed to engage Allied armour far more effectively than earlier weapons. This main armament significantly enhances its battlefield performance against well-protected opponents. In addition, the tank features improved armour compared to its predecessors, with frontal protection reaching up to 50mm. These upgrades provide a balanced combination of survivability and combat capability, while a sufficiently powerful engine ensures good mobility across a range of terrains.
Building on experience gained from fitting Rift-based weaponry to the Chi-Ha, a variant of the Chi-Nu mounts the Type 99 Shiboru cannon. This version adds an advanced technological element, increasing both tactical options and narrative appeal in gameplay. The set contains one resin and plastic tank, carefully detailed to accurately represent this distinctive vehicle. It offers a flexible and thematic addition to any Japanese force, combining historical inspiration with innovative design and strong tabletop presence.
