In the mid-18th century, following the heavy defeats of the Seven Years’ War, the French Navy reached a low point. Weakened and diminished, it suffered substantial losses in both ships and operational capability. However, this period of decline also marked the beginning of a determined effort to rebuild and restore France’s naval strength.

Under the leadership of Louis XV and later Louis XVI, the fleet was gradually modernized and reinforced. Significant investment led to the construction of well-designed and well-built ships, improving overall performance and durability in combat. This naval revival allowed France to reassert itself as a major maritime power, supported by a renewed and capable fleet ready to challenge its rivals once more.
