Third rate ships of the line, as defined by the British rating system, were vessels mounting between 64 and 80 guns. Typically featuring two gun decks, they were substantial warships, though more balanced than the larger first and second rates. Despite being smaller than the largest ships of the line, they offered an effective—and often superior—balance of sailing performance, firepower, and cost efficiency.
For many navies, third rates were the most commonly used ships of the line. Their lower cost of construction and operation, combined with strong combat capability, made them highly versatile assets. While they could not typically engage larger three-deck ships of the line alone, they were fully capable in most naval battles and served across a wide range of roles, from fleet actions to convoy escort duties.
The 3rd Rates Squadron kit allows players to field these vessels on the tabletop in Black Seas. Designed as a generic set, it can represent ships from any nation. The sprues include customization options such as different figureheads and stern plates, allowing players to create a truly unique fleet.
