Frigates & Brigs Flotilla (1770 - 1830)

Frigates were among the most hard-worked and versatile warship types of the Age of Sail. Designed as fast, lightly built but well-armed vessels, they offered an ideal balance of speed, firepower, and resilience. Typically featuring a main gun deck with additional armament on the upper decks, frigates excelled in single-ship combat and privateering against merchant shipping.

Brigs are two-masted, square-rigged vessels carrying between 10 and 18 cannons. Classified as unrated ships, they were not intended for major fleet battles, which were dominated by ships of the line. However, they were the preferred vessels of privateers and still played a valuable support role in larger engagements, particularly in relaying orders and messages.
