Gunboats are, in comparison to the mighty ships of the line, little more than gnats on the naval battlefield. However, despite their size, they still serve a valuable tactical purpose within Age of Sail fleets. Typically featuring a single mast with square-rigged sails, they carry between one and three fixed cannons, prioritizing simplicity, speed of construction, and cost efficiency over raw firepower.
Used by all major navies, gunboats are especially effective in shallow waters and coastal environments where larger ships struggle to operate. Their shallow draft and low cost make them ideal for mass deployment. While a single gunboat poses little threat to a frigate, a swarm of them can overwhelm even larger vessels through sheer numbers, forcing opponents to absorb significant damage before clearing them from the field.
In Black Seas, gunboat squadrons represent extremely small vessels that are difficult to hit due to their size. While highly evasive, they are vulnerable to collisions, especially when faced with larger, faster-moving ships. They mount only a single light cannon and cannot be upgraded, making them simple but specialized units on the tabletop.
