Few vehicles embody the logistical backbone of the German war machine quite like the Opel Blitz. From the scorching sands of North Africa to the quagmire of the Eastern Front, this iconic truck hauled troops, supplies, and weapons across every theatre. Available in both the 2-wheel drive Type S and the more versatile 4-wheel drive “Allrad” version, the Blitz was a sturdy workhorse that proved easily adaptable as a radio truck, tanker, or even a makeshift anti-aircraft platform mounting 20mm or 37mm cannons—and in some cases, the fearsome Flakvierling 38.
Among its many variants, the Opel Maultier (“Mule”) stands out as a direct response to the brutal mud and snow of Russia’s infamous Rasputitsa. Introduced in 1941, this half-track hybrid borrowed the Panzer I’s running gear to give the Wehrmacht a reliable transport capable of tackling extreme conditions. From that point on, the Maultier served as an essential all-terrain logistics vehicle until the final days of the war.
