Sd.Kfz 251/7 Ausf D Pionierwagen – The German Army's Half-Tracked Engineer Vehicle
The Sd.Kfz 251/7 Ausf D, commonly known as the Pionierwagen, was a half-tracked armored vehicle based on the ubiquitous Sd.Kfz 251 Hanomag. It was a highly versatile vehicle for the assault engineers of the German Army, seeing service on all fronts, from the vast expanses of the Russian Front to the rubble-filled streets of Berlin in 1945.
The most striking features of the Pionierwagen were its two detachable assault bridge ramps, mounted along the top of the crew compartment. These ramps could be quickly removed and placed to span ditches, broken bridges, or other similar obstacles. Additionally, side lockers carried inflatable boats for river crossings. Early versions of the Pionierwagen mounted a 3.7cm PaK 36 anti-tank gun in place of the forward machine gun, but as the war progressed, these became less effective and were replaced by the Panzerbüchse 41 squeeze-bore gun, giving it a more realistic chance against Allied armor.
