Standing firm against the advancing French columns, the Dutch and Belgian infantry of Wellington’s Allied army played a far more significant role at Waterloo than they are often given credit for.
During the Hundred Days campaign of 1815, soldiers from the Kingdom of the Netherlands made up nearly a third of the Allied forces opposing Napoleon. Many of these troops had served in the French army only a year earlier, leading Wellington to question how they would perform against their former emperor.
Those doubts proved misplaced. Throughout the brutal fighting of the Waterloo campaign, Dutch and Belgian infantry held their ground against repeated French assaults. Formed into firing lines, these troops poured disciplined volleys into advancing French columns and helped wear down Napoleon’s army over the course of the battle.
This boxed set is ideal for building a strong line infantry unit for Black Powder, perfectly suited to Waterloo-era Allied armies.
The firing stances, distinctive uniforms and colourful standards give this unit impressive movement and battlefield presence once assembled and painted.
From former soldiers of the French Empire to determined defenders of the Allied cause, these regiments became an important part of Napoleon’s final defeat at Waterloo.
