Following the French invasion of Portugal in 1807, the Portuguese Army fought alongside Britain against Napoleon’s forces. Extensive British-led military reforms beginning in 1809 greatly improved the effectiveness of Portuguese units, including the cavalry regiments that campaigned across the Iberian Peninsula.

Portuguese cavalry officers were responsible for controlling rapid manoeuvres under fire, rallying troopers during chaotic engagements and ensuring their regiments could react quickly to shifting battlefield conditions.
