When French forces invaded Portugal in 1807, the country was drawn directly into the chaos of the Napoleonic Wars. Bound to Great Britain through one of Europe’s oldest alliances, Portugal soon became a major battleground of the Peninsular campaign as British forces under Arthur Wellesley arrived to drive the French from Iberian soil.
Initially brave but inexperienced, the Portuguese Army underwent a remarkable transformation under Lieutenant-General William Beresford. British drill, discipline and battlefield tactics reshaped the army into an increasingly reliable fighting force capable of standing alongside veteran British troops.
Dressed in their distinctive blue uniforms, Portuguese line infantry earned widespread respect during the Peninsular War. Wellington himself famously praised them as his “fighting cocks”, recognising their growing effectiveness against Napoleon’s armies.
