With sabres drawn and horses charging forward, Portuguese cavalry played an important role alongside British forces during the brutal campaigns of the Peninsular War.
Although smaller than the cavalry forces fielded by Europe’s major powers, the Portuguese army benefited enormously from British-led reforms beginning in 1809. Improved training, equipment and organisation transformed Portuguese troops into an increasingly capable battlefield force.
Portuguese cavalry regiments performed a wide range of duties throughout the conflict, including reconnaissance, screening allied advances, pursuing retreating French troops and launching charges against enemy formations. Their speed and flexibility made them a valuable asset within Wellington’s multinational army.
For Black Powder, these mounted troopers provide an excellent addition to Portuguese or allied Peninsular War armies, bringing mobility, historical character and striking visual appeal to the tabletop.
The elegant uniforms, dynamic riding poses and detailed horses make this cavalry set especially rewarding for collectors and painters looking to expand their Iberian forces.
