US Airborne officers underwent the same rigorous training as their troops, producing leaders just as tough as the men they commanded. Emphasis was placed on aggression and initiative, as platoon commanders were often required to operate independently for extended periods. This proved crucial during the intense but localized fighting of the Battle of the Bulge. Specialists attached to headquarters units, such as radiomen and medics, received the same training—first and foremost, they were paratroopers.

Forward observers are liaison officers responsible for coordinating aircraft strikes or heavy artillery fire from behind the front lines. They are typically accompanied by a radio operator and other immediate attendants.
