Following the initial spectacular success of the German invasion of Russia in 1941, the advance slowed to a crawl as harsh weather and fierce fighting wore down their formations. To reinforce the front, seven regiments were formed from non-flying personnel taken from the Luftwaffe. Equipped with standard infantry weapons, these troops were sent to quieter sectors to gain combat experience.
As the war progressed, more Luftwaffe personnel were drafted into what became the Luftwaffe Field Divisions, with 21 divisions formed at full strength, each numbering around 12,500 men. These units wore the distinctive Luftwaffe blue-grey uniforms, often supplemented with camouflaged M1942 jackets or zeltbahn tent capes. Despite limited training, they fought bravely in Normandy, Italy, and on the Russian front.
The average age of soldiers in these units was around 30 years old, older than typical frontline troops, reflecting their unique composition. Their inexperience and the harsh conditions led to higher casualties compared to regular army units. Nonetheless, these troops earned 18 Knight’s Cross medals over three years of service, a testament to their courage and determination. This box set contains a 10-man Luftwaffe Field Division squad including an NCO, a machine gun team, Panzerfaust-equipped soldiers, and riflemen.
