The men of the Kriegsmarine were not limited to naval service. Throughout the war, U-Boat and surface ship crews were often deployed in land combat, far from the oceans they were trained to patrol. Dressed in their iconic dark blue naval uniforms or wearing grey-blue leather U-Boat gear, these sailors adapted to a new kind of warfare, showing determination and grit as they took the fight to the enemy on land. Their unexpected role gave them a distinctive presence among the German fighting forces.

Uniquely, the German Navy was involved in both the first and the last military actions of the Second World War. In 1939, naval infantry units stormed the Polish port of Danzig at the very outset of the conflict. By 1945, those same troops—often re-equipped with Wehrmacht weapons and armed with panzerfausts—were landing in the heart of Berlin by seaplane or transport aircraft in a last-ditch effort to halt the advancing Soviet forces. Their transformation from sailors to frontline fighters marked one of the war’s more unusual military evolutions.

The Kriegsmarine fielded at least three full infantry divisions, some of which were led by regular army officers to benefit from their battlefield experience, though many units remained under their naval commanders such as U-Boat officers or Corvette Captains. These troops fought in a wide range of operations including Poland, Narvik, Russia, Dieppe, Arnhem, and several encircled port cities, as well as across Holland and Berlin. In the Netherlands, the British 53rd Welsh Division nicknamed them the "Blue Devils" due to their tenacity. Models are supplied unassembled and unpainted.
