Fallschirmjager
Fallschirmjäger – German Paratroopers
The world’s first large-scale airborne troops, the Fallschirmjäger were at the tip of the spear when war broke out in 1939. Specialists in lightning-fast assaults, they played a key role in securing strategic objectives, such as the daring capture of Fort Eben-Emael, paving the way for the German Panzer divisions to overrun Europe.
Their greatest achievement as a paratrooper force came in 1941, during the intense fighting of the Battle of Crete, where they seized the island despite facing overwhelming British and Commonwealth forces. However, this Pyrrhic victory was so costly that the Fallschirmjäger were never again deployed in mass airborne operations.
Smaller units continued to operate via glider and parachute, famously rescuing Italian leader Mussolini and raiding behind American lines in the Ardennes. Their finest hour was undoubtedly their ferocious defense of Monte Cassino, where they held the monastery for months against overwhelming Allied forces, earning the nickname “Green Devils”. The German paratroopers were arguably the toughest soldiers in an already hardened army.
Warlord Games Fallschirmjäger miniatures are perfect for battles in Northwest Europe and can also be used for Eastern Front engagements.
