Combining the obsolete yet reliable chassis of the Czech-built Pz 38(t) with a captured Soviet 76.2mm PaK 36(r) anti-tank gun, the Marder III gave the Wehrmacht a powerful self-propelled gun. These Soviet cannons were rechambered to fire standard German 75mm PaK 40 ammunition, ensuring smoother logistics on the battlefield. As the war progressed, most of these early guns were replaced with the more modern PaK 40 anti-tank weapon.
The Marder III saw action across both the Eastern and Western fronts, as well as in North Africa, where it proved one of the few effective German responses to the heavily armored British Matilda infantry tanks. Its light chassis and powerful gun allowed for effective long-range strikes, though its open fighting compartment left crews vulnerable in close engagements.
A total of 1,581 Marder III vehicles were produced, and they remained in active service until the end of the war in 1945.
