Developed during the final months of the Second World War, the Flakpanzer IV Ostwind was Germany’s response to the increasing dominance of Allied air power. Only 44 units were produced by combining the reliable chassis of the Panzer IV with an open-topped, six-sided turret mounting a single 37mm Flak 43 automatic cannon. This upgrade over the Wirbelwind's quad 20mm guns offered improved range, accuracy, and stopping power, making the Ostwind a much-needed boost to mobile anti-air capabilities.
While the open turret left the crew vulnerable to airburst shrapnel and strafing runs, it allowed for superior elevation and rapid engagement of fast-moving aerial targets. On the battlefield, however, the Ostwind wasn’t just feared by pilots. Its heavy autocannon proved deadly against infantry formations and lightly armoured vehicles, offering a versatile solution to both ground and air threats. This adaptability made it a valued asset within Panzer divisions, even if its numbers were few.
In games of Bolt Action, the Ostwind stands out as a powerful support unit for late-war German Armoured Platoons. Its combination of mobility, armour, and the heavy autocannon’s devastating firepower makes it a potent tool against a variety of targets. Whether countering air attacks or laying down suppressive fire on advancing troops, the Ostwind ensures that the battlefield remains firmly under your control—both on the ground and in the skies.
