In the summer of 1940, following the Fall of France and the Dunkirk evacuation, Britain faced the looming threat of a German invasion under Operation Sea Lion. With much of the nation’s heavy equipment abandoned in Europe, the British government urgently needed an inexpensive way to bolster airfield defenses. The solution had to avoid diverting resources from conventional armaments.
The answer came in the form of the Armadillo – an improvised armoured vehicle built on standard truck chassis. Its defensive structure was made of wooden walls filled with gravel to absorb incoming fire, while the driver's cab was shielded with mild steel plating. Used primarily by the Royal Air Force to guard aerodromes and by the Home Guard, the Armadillo was typically armed with rifles or Lewis guns. However, more than fifty Mk. III variants, like the one featured here, were upgraded with old naval Hotchkiss 3-pounder guns, giving them a surprisingly strong punch for such a makeshift vehicle.
This kit contains one resin and metal Mk. III Armadillo self-propelled gun, a Bolt Action stat card, vehicle damage markers, full-colour waterslide decals, and one Bolt Action order die. Model supplied unassembled and unpainted.
