The final result can be influenced before the marker even touches the miniature. A white or light-coloured primer provides a strong foundation for the contrast effect, while a Slapchop preparation can introduce additional tonal variation. Highlights and shadows are first established using black, grey and white, then covered with Dipping Ink. Because the paint remains translucent, the values underneath continue to show through and contribute to the definition of the miniature.

When it is time to apply the colour, simply shake the marker thoroughly and work directly onto the surface. The size 2 nib offers a practical balance between coverage and control, while eliminating the need for a brush, wet palette or separate paint container. It can be used across different areas of miniatures, characters and wargaming armies. For smaller surfaces or more precise work, the size 2 nib can be replaced with a separately available size 1 nib.

The key is to let the paint do the work rather than repeatedly manipulating it. Distribute the Dipping Ink evenly and avoid excessive passes over areas that have already started to dry. This helps preserve the way the translucent paint settles naturally across recesses and raised details.

Once the original paint has been used, the marker can continue to serve as part of a reusable painting setup. It can be cleaned, refilled and reused with Dipping Ink, airbrush paints or other acrylic paints with a suitable consistency. Thicker paints can be adjusted with acrylic thinner when necessary. Replacement kits containing nibs and internal components are also available for renewing the marker and extending its working life.
