Legio Custodes
The Legio Custodes, more commonly known as the Adeptus Custodes, represent the absolute elite of the Imperium during the era of the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy. Created directly by the Emperor of Mankind, these warriors are far more than ordinary soldiers. They are the Emperor’s personal guardians, entrusted with the protection of His person and the defense of the Imperial Palace on Terra. In Warhammer The Horus Heresy, they appear as a rare but extraordinarily powerful force on the battlefield. Each Custodian is the result of an incredibly complex process of genetic and psychological enhancement, far more advanced than the methods used to create Space Marines, which explains why their numbers are extremely limited.
On the tabletop, the Legio Custodes stand apart thanks to their exceptional martial discipline, superior wargear, and remarkably high combat capabilities. Their auramite armor, guardian spears, and advanced defensive equipment make them formidable warriors capable of facing enemies far more numerous than themselves. Each miniature represents a highly trained champion who can hold key positions or break enemy lines through sheer skill and resilience. This elite design means Custodes armies typically field fewer models, but each warrior possesses outstanding durability, precision, and offensive power that can dominate prolonged engagements against many opponents.
Within the narrative context of the Horus Heresy, the Custodians also play a critical role. Bound by absolute loyalty to the Emperor alone, they remain largely stationed on Terra to guard the Golden Throne and monitor the political stability of the Imperium. However, selected forces are sometimes deployed to critical war zones when the survival of humanity itself is at stake. On the battlefield in The Horus Heresy, this faction is defined by its imposing presence, disciplined mobility, and remarkable ability to eliminate priority targets with lethal efficiency. Commanding the Legio Custodes means leading a small cadre of near-mythical warriors whose actions can decisively shape the outcome of a battle.
