Seizing the opportunity and pressured by Soviet forces preparing for a winter offensive from the east, Hitler launched one last desperate counterattack in December 1944. Codenamed Operation Watch on the Rhine, this massive assault involved 45 German divisions striking American defenders dug in across the Ardennes. It became the largest single battle fought by the US Army in the twentieth century, with critical stakes for both sides. The German breakthrough created a distinctive bulge in the Allied front line, earning the offensive the immortal nickname: The Battle of the Bulge.
