The story of the Custos Crypta begins in 700 BCE, at the height of the Kushite Empire, when the authority of Pharaoh Neferkare Shabaka was absolute. Shabaka was believed to be blessed by the Egyptian goddess Khepera, and it was in her name that he ruled from Nubia to the Nile Delta, sustained by daily blood sacrifices offered in his honour. In return, the Kushite Empire was granted the service of the Custos Crypta, a sentient insectoid species tasked with acting as both guardians and custodians of the Pharaoh and his people. Yet, as so often in history, betrayal followed power: Shabaka was murdered by his nephew Taharqa, and the remaining Custos Crypta were entombed within the pyramid of el-Kurru.

The Crypt Guardian is the last known survivor of this ancient lineage. Thought to have perished by the priests of the time, the creature instead entered a state of cryptobiosis, preserving itself in a dormant form within the tomb. When the pyramid was excavated in 1919 by George Reisner’s expedition, the Guardian was recovered and transported to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It remained inert until researcher Sara Heriot accidentally spilled water upon its desiccated form. By morning, the Guardian had vanished—revived, and once again enacting the will of Khepera as it re-entered the Shadow War to restore its goddess’s design.

This set presents an ancient, enigmatic, and highly organic faction, composed of insectoid servants and mentally controlled human agents. The Crypt Guardian extends its influence through compelled hosts such as Sara Heriot and Victoria Taylor, while Crypt Grubs serve as numerous larval forms capable of evolving into specialised castes. Among these, the Crypt Sham represents a refined infiltration form, capable of blending into urban environments and observing targets undetected for extended periods. Together, these models create a faction focused on surveillance, infiltration, and gradual battlefield control.
