Foam Clay is a lightweight acrylic-based modelling compound widely used in cosplay, crafting, and miniature modelling. Its soft and easy-to-handle texture allows it to be shaped by hand or with sculpting tools, offering great creative freedom. It is ideal for making highly detailed terrain pieces, miniatures, cosplay accessories such as armour and weapons, as well as various craft and DIY projects like sculpting and moulding custom shapes. Unlike many traditional modelling materials, it air-dries naturally within 24 to 48 hours without the need for baking or special equipment.
One of its key advantages is its flexibility and water-based workability. Even after drying, it retains a degree of elasticity, significantly reducing the risk of cracking, especially on larger or frequently handled pieces. This makes it particularly well suited for wearable projects such as cosplay costumes. Before drying, it can also be smoothed with water, allowing seamless joints between parts and helping achieve a clean, professional-looking finish.
Foam Clay also works extremely well with silicone moulds, enabling fast reproduction of intricate textures and fine details. For thicker moulds, a cooling technique can be used to help with demoulding. It combines effectively with materials such as EVA foam and ThermoArt thermoplastics, especially in large-scale projects, thanks to its ability to adhere easily to surfaces and fill gaps. Once fully dry, it can be painted with acrylic paints, with a primer recommended for optimal adhesion. For flexible projects, flexible paints are advised to prevent cracking over time.
