More than any other European power, Russia relied upon the endurance and determination of its ordinary foot soldiers to halt Napoleon’s advance.
Drawn largely from harsh rural backgrounds, Russian infantrymen were accustomed to hardship long before entering military service. Poorly supplied, often badly led and equipped with outdated muskets, they nevertheless earned the respect of both allies and enemies through sheer stubbornness and unwavering battlefield discipline.
French officers frequently remarked on the Russian soldier’s refusal to break under pressure. Artillery bombardments, cavalry attacks and infantry assaults could punish their lines severely, yet Russian regiments continued to fight with grim determination — often relying on the bayonet when firepower alone was not enough.
