Fought during the first days of July 1863, Gettysburg saw General Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia clash with General George G. Meade’s Army of the Potomac. After days of brutal fighting, the desperate assault known as Pickett’s Charge failed, forcing the Confederates to retreat and marking a major turning point in the war.
