They march forward without regard for pain, their great shields forming a grim barrier between the enemies of the Hundred Kingdoms and their objectives. The Penitents of St Lazarus are enduring zealots whose unnatural resilience makes them particularly suited to prolonged engagements.
Unlike the other Orders, the Lazarene operate in small cells of devoted warriors. Their blessings and curses are passed from one generation to the next through a bloody communion. The disease that ravages their nervous systems gradually dulls their sensitivity, but it also drives their strength and endurance beyond ordinary human limits.
The result is a disturbing breed of warrior built for persistence rather than speed. Their corpse-like appearance, expressions marked by suffering and imposing shields make them an unsettling sight on the battlefield. Once committed to a position, they can focus on enduring the enemy’s attacks and extending the engagement.
In Conquest: First Blood, the Penitents can act as a defensive anchor for a Hundred Kingdoms force. Their resilience makes them particularly suited to holding an important position and weathering sustained pressure from opposing units.
In Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings, they naturally lend themselves to a strategy based around attrition warfare. Rather than relying on a rapid decisive strike, they can tie enemy forces down in prolonged engagements and force them to fight on unfavourable terms over time.
This dual kit also provides an alternative build: the miniatures can be assembled as either Penitents of St Lazarus or Martyrs of St Lazarus.
With their exceptional resilience, imposing shields and defensive battlefield role, the Penitents of St Lazarus give the Hundred Kingdoms a unit built to hold the line and drag the enemy into a punishing war of attrition.
