Among the fiercest opponents encountered by the Roman Republic were the Samnites, an Oscan tribal people who occupied the mountainous regions of central and southern Italy. Their repeated wars against Rome earned them a formidable military reputation and established them as one of the Republic's most determined enemies.
This set contains 24 highly detailed Ancient Armoured Samnite miniatures, representing the better-equipped warriors of these Italic armies. Their distinctive armour and equipment capture the appearance of Samnite fighters while providing an excellent foundation for historically themed collections.
Rather than relying on tightly packed formations, the Samnites often fought in more open battle lines, making effective use of javelins and swords. Their preference for broken, wooded and hilly terrain allowed them to exploit their mobility before closing in for fierce hand-to-hand combat, a style of warfare that challenged Roman armies throughout the Samnite Wars.
The versatility of the set extends beyond Samnite armies alone. These miniatures can also serve as allies or mercenaries within Carthaginian forces, while with minimal adaptation they are equally suitable for representing other Italic peoples such as the Lucanians, Bruttii and Campanians. This broad historical applicability makes the collection an excellent addition to armies set during the conflicts of ancient Italy.
