Each FM-1 consists of an armoured explosive sphere fitted with contact detonators, thermal sensors and small manoeuvring thrusters that allow it to drift slowly towards approaching targets. Even when an enemy vessel survives the initial blast, the mine has often achieved its purpose by exposing the intrusion and disrupting hostile operations.
