Open-cell extruded XPS foam is a lightweight and versatile modelling material designed for hobbyists and terrain builders who require an easy-to-shape base for realistic scenery. Compared to closed-cell XPS foam, it is less dense and offers a “low memory” effect, making it especially suitable for engraving, carving, texturing, and rough shaping. This makes it ideal for building hills, cliffs, modular gaming boards, architectural elements, and custom diorama structures with high detail flexibility.
Its slightly abrasive surface, similar to very fine sandpaper, enhances tool grip and allows precise sculpting and texturing. The material can be carved, embossed, or shaped using texture rollers and modelling tools. Before painting, it is recommended to apply a protective sealing layer such as a decoupage medium to stabilize the surface and ensure better paint adhesion. In addition, the foam offers good moisture resistance and thermal insulation properties, making it a reliable choice for long-lasting gaming terrain and scenic builds.
The foam can be processed using a variety of tools depending on the desired finish:
Specifications: 200 x 300 mm sheet, 30 mm thickness, open-cell structure, estimated density 33 kg/m³. As with all XPS materials, safety precautions are essential. Cutting, sanding, or heating can release harmful fumes, so use in a well-ventilated area with appropriate respiratory protection. Maximum safe working temperature is 75°C.
