Open-cell extruded XPS foam (Styrofoam) is a lightweight and versatile modelling material designed for terrain building, dioramas and wargaming scenery. Compared to closed-cell XPS foam, it is less dense and provides a “low memory” behaviour, making it ideal for engraving, carving, texturing and rough shaping. It is commonly used to create hills, cliffs, gaming boards, architectural elements such as bricks and columns, or scenic bases across different scales.
The surface has a slightly abrasive feel, similar to very fine sandpaper, which improves tool grip and enables precise detailing. For painting and finishing, it is recommended to apply a protective coating or sealing layer such as Decoupage Medium to stabilize the surface and improve paint adhesion. Unlike denser closed-cell foams, this material can also be sculpted or textured using rollers and carving tools, offering extensive creative flexibility for hobby use.
The foam can be shaped using several tools depending on the required finish:
Specifications: 200 x 300 mm sheet, 20 mm thickness, open-cell structure, estimated density 33 kg/m³. As with all XPS materials, safety precautions are required, as cutting, sanding or heating may release harmful fumes. Always work in a well-ventilated area and use appropriate respiratory protection. Maximum safe working temperature: 75°C.
