Immense mechanical constructions lie motionless at the bottom of the sea.

The darkness is broken only by the bioluminescence of strange creatures never before seen by man.

Crustaceans crawl gently across the surface of the metal objects, checking for any unusual form of whale fall. In the absence of food, the gathering is restricted.

There is no sense here, elemental life forms act purely by instinct, like mechanical toys, simply carrying out the tasks of survival.

Metal knows nothing, it simply is.

Deep within the giant shells, a form of survival is also at work.

The RJ-1027 pulses through tubes that heat steam to create pressure in pistons, preventing the embers from dying out in this dark place.

You'd think a living thing was waiting, but it was just existing, until something else made it move. Time passed.

Then the surrounding area lit up with a green glow as they began to move at full speed, thanks to complex and confusing mechanisms that reacted to orders given by an invisible vessel on the surface.

If anyone had seen them, they might have thought these behemoths were alive, because they were designed to look that way.

The engines pushed them forward and, within hours, they would be involved in violence that would claim the lives of dozens of humans.

Others would never forget the terrifying shapes of the Aronnax as they charged at their ships, their massive jaws tearing through hulls with ease.

Stories of sea beasts chilled the hearts of those who heard them, but the machines didn't care. They were merely tools, used by the all-too-human Alliance of the Illuminated.
